Learn about International Fuel Tax Agreement, also known as IFTA

What is IFTA?

IFTA stands for International Fuel Tax Agreement. It is an agreement between the United States and Canadian provinces to simplify the reporting of fuel use by motor carriers, also often referred to as truckers or transportation companies, operating in multiple jurisdictions across Canada and the United States. Under IFTA, participating jurisdictions, like Alberta or British Columbia, issue a single fuel use license to qualified motor carriers, allowing them to operate in all member jurisdictions, provinces, and states, without obtaining additional fuel use licenses. Motor carriers are required to report their fuel consumption and mileage on a quarterly basis to the jurisdiction in which they are licensed. The jurisdiction then calculates the fuel tax due to each member jurisdiction based on the miles traveled in that jurisdiction and the fuel consumed. If a motor carrier operates in a non-IFTA jurisdiction, they will need to obtain a fuel use license or permit from that jurisdiction.

When is IFTA filing due?

IFTA tax returns must be filed on a quarterly basis. The deadlines for filing are as follows:

  • 1st Quarter (January - March): Due by April 30th

  • 2nd Quarter (April - June): Due by July 31st

  • 3rd Quarter (July - September): Due by October 31st

  • 4th Quarter (October - December): Due by January 31st

It's important to file your IFTA tax return by these deadlines to avoid penalties and maintain compliance.

Is IFTA mandatory?

IFTA is a requirement for motor carriers operating in multiple jurisdictions. Jurisdictions such as different provinces in Canada or states in the United States. Driving in more than one means IFTA is necessary.

Motor carriers or/and trucking companies that

  • operate qualified vehicles with two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight in excess of 11,797 kilograms (26,000 pounds),

  • or, those with three or more axles, regardless of weight,

  • or, if used in combination with a trailer, a combined weight that exceeds 11,797 kilograms (26,000 lbs.) must register for and participate in the IFTA program if they operate in two or more IFTA member jurisdictions. If a motor carrier only operates within a single jurisdiction, they do not need to register for IFTA. However, if they subsequently begin operating in multiple jurisdictions, they will need to register for IFTA.

What happens if I don’t file my IFTA quarter?

If you don't file your IFTA quarterly return, you may be subject to penalties and fines. The specific penalties and fines will depend on the jurisdiction in which you are licensed. Failure to file an IFTA quarterly return may also result in the suspension or revocation of your IFTA license, which would prevent you from operating in IFTA member jurisdictions, which means, lost revenue and income for you and your business. It is important to file your IFTA quarterly return on time to avoid these consequences. Here at MKON we can help you register and file your IFTA quarterly so you don’t have to worry about it.
